FHE

September's Sharing Time Theme is all about service.

For FHE this month, here are some songs about service to start with each week.

"Give," Said the Little Stream (#236)

A Happy Helper (#197)
I Have Two Little Hands (#272)
I'll Walk with You (#140)
I'm Trying to Be like Jesus (#78)
When We're Helping (#198)

For the month of September, it would be great to do a service project every week for FHE. Here are some ideas from the Millions of Miles blog.

*Have your kids pick out a couple of outgrown outfits and then take them to their school's resource center. Often, they use extra outfits when kids have an emergency or can send home with kids in crisis.

*Stock up on hats, gloves and socks the next time you see them on sale and drop them off at a local homeless shelter.

*Make some homemade dog treats and take to a local animal shelter.

*Take a handful of quarters and a roll of tape and stick the quarters on gumball machines all over town. Or put the quarters inside the coin return on a video game machine. You will totally make a child's day!

*Take your outgrown coats to a local shelter.

*Find a need and meet it. We are all on social media and see need daily. Did a friend's house burn down? Take supplies. Someone sick? Take a meal.

*Bake cookies together and deliver to the fire station or police station.

*Put together a care package for a missionary or member of the military.

*We all know an area where homeless people tend to always be- maybe outside a certain building or at the end of an exit ramp. Make a bag of food (protein bars, pop top canned food, peanut butter and crackers, dried fruit, nuts, etc.) and keep it in the car until you find a person who needs it.

*Take rawhides to the animal shelter. Cold, winter days are long and little doggies could use something to help them pass the day. Kids also love to play with animals!

*Find an area in town that is dirty and littered and clean it up!

June's Sharing Time theme is about Baptism and the Holy Ghost.

Did you know that you can access the the LDS Family Home Evening Manual online. There are some great lessons, with lots of materials. Below is an adaptation of one about following the Holy Ghost. You can read the whole lesson here.

Learning to Recognize the Spirit
Start by singing "The Still Small Voice". Or you can do the round of "Listen, Listen".

Have a prayer, then share the following scripture and story.
"Yea, ye have heard his voice from time to time; and he hath spoken unto you in a still small voice."
[1 Nephi 17:45]

Following the Holy Spirit

“I was once saved from death or serious accident because my father hearkened to the voice of the Spirit. If he had not responded instantly to the whisperings of the still small voice, my life might have ended then or had its course totally changed.

“One of my earliest childhood recollections is of riding a horse through an apple orchard. The horse was tame and well broken, and I felt at home in the saddle.

“But one day something frightened my mount, and he bolted through the orchard. I was swept from the saddle by the overhanging limbs, and one leg slipped down through the stirrup. I desperately hung to an almost broken leather strap that a cowboy uses to tie a lariat to his saddle. My weight should have broken the strap, but somehow it held for the moment. Another lunge or two of the stampeding horse would have broken the strap or wrenched it from my hands and left me to be dragged to injury or death with my foot entangled in the stirrup.

“Suddenly the horse stopped, and I became aware that someone was holding the bridle tightly and attempting to calm the quivering animal. Almost immediately I was snatched up into the arms of my father.

“What had happened? What had brought my father to my rescue in the split second before I slipped beneath the hoofs of my panic-driven horse?

“My father had been sitting in the house reading the newspaper when the Spirit whispered to him, ‘Run out into the orchard!’

“Without a moment’s hesitation, not waiting to learn why or for what reason, my father ran. Finding himself in the orchard without knowing why he was there, he saw the galloping horse and thought, I must stop this horse.

“He did so and found me. And that is how I was saved from serious injury or possible death.” (Bruce R. McConkie, “Hearken to the Spirit,” Friend, Sept. 1972, pp. 10–11.)

Activity:
On a poster list some ways the Holy Ghost helps, teaches, and protects us. Have your family name as many ways as they can. Be sure the following ideas are covered. The Holy Ghost—

1. Warns us of danger or evil (as in Elder McConkie’s story).
2. Gives us our testimonies (Alma 5:46).
3. Helps us know and choose the right (D&C 11:12).
4. Helps us understand things (D&C 6:15).
5. Helps us recognize truth (Moroni 10:5).
6. Guides us in important decisions (2 Nephi 32:5).
7. Teaches us (John 14:26).
8. Inspires us (Luke 12:12).
9. Comforts us (Galatians 5:22).
10. Helps us remember things (John 14:26).
11. Helps us understand and communicate with each other (Alma 12:3).

Help your family understand that as they learn to be guided by the Spirit they will begin to perfect themselves.

May's Sharing Time theme is all about Prophets. Here are a couple of FHE ideas to go along with this month's theme.

Follow the Prophet Treasure Hunt
Here is an idea for an FHE on following the prophet. Start off with a prayer and sing a few verses of that primary favorite- "Follow the Prophet". To play the Treasure Hunt, designate one family member as the "prophet". They can choose which prophet they want to be. Have the prophet go into another room in the house and hide a church related object-e.g. some scriptures, church shoes, a picture of the temple. Then the prophet will give directions on how to find the object (without telling exactly where it is). The person who finds the object then becomes the new prophet. There are many variations on this game, come up with something new and share it below!

Here's the words and music to "Follow the Prophet".

President Monson Jeopardy Game

We all love President Monson and learning about his life has never been more fun. Check out this fun game, posted on Sofia's Primary Ideas. Your kids will love learning more about the prophet and it will make FHE a game night!
