Activity Days for September:
The girls are starting school. This is a great time to make bulletin boards, magnet boards, or white boards with special boxes for homework due dates and weekly goals. Have the girls share homework tips and share some goals they have for school this year. The bulletin boards might have a favorite scripture or some other quote to encourage them. Help them understand the importance of keeping current with school work and accomplishing goals.
Teach the girls about what constitutes a healthy lunch. Have them plan menus for their school lunches for a week. Make a healthy lunch for them to take to school the next day.
Activity Day Ideas for July:
It's summer! Perhaps most of you are only meeting a couple of times over the summer so a "bigger deal" might be appropriate. Perhaps a swimming party, a beach trip to Alameda, or a picnic in the park. Remember that you can always incorporate learning skills into these--perhaps bring in someone to teach pool safety or a teen ager to teach swimming techniques and skills. A beach trip could include a little history of the place or some service in the way of cleaning up a little strip of beach. A picnic could include some cooking or packaging ideas for take along food. Have fun!
A Message from Jana:
Yeah!!!! Summer's finally here! I like to play summer by ear when it comes to activity days. People have such varied schedules and getting together gets more and more complicated (plus everybody might need a little break). Think hard about what your girls might need over the summer and plan accordingly. One idea I had was a summer book club. Have the girls vote on some books to read over the summer. This could incorporate a trip to the local library, maybe a trip to Storyteller bookstore in Lafayette (talk to President Mullen's wife Jana--she works there). Perhaps there's someone in your ward who loves children's books and could be a guest speaker. The girls could read the books independently over the summer and maybe have one party during the summer that was a movie night where the girls watch the movie of a book they've chosen to read. Keep it simple--it's summer!
